Armaan Malik hails from a Bollywood music dynasty. His father, Dabboo Malik, initially pursued acting and portrayed young Bhishma in BR Chopra’s Mahabharata before transitioning to a successful career as a music director. Armaan Malik belongs to a family steeped in musical tradition. Armaan’s elder uncle, Anu Malik, is Dabboo’s older brother and is a renowned music director in the Bollywood industry. Anu Malik has showcased his musical prowess in numerous blockbuster Bollywood films.
His Bollywood music lineage extends to his grandfather, a prominent figure in the industry. Born on January 13, 1930, in Kapurthala, Punjab, Sardar Malik received his education in Uttarakhand. During his schooling, Sardar Malik pursued dance training at the Uday Shankar India Cultural Center in Almora, excelling in folk dances such as Kathakali, Bharatnatyam, and Manipuri. In addition to his dance pursuits, Sardar Malik also received music training from the renowned Ustad Alauddin Khan.
In the 1940s, Sardar Malik arrived in Mumbai with dreams of making a mark in the film industry. Throughout his career, he composed more than 600 songs and even shared accommodation with Guru Dutt in Mumbai.
As he worked tirelessly to establish himself in the city, Sardar frequented studios with determination and his efforts eventually bore fruit. He was allowed to choreograph the 1945 film Chalis Crore Nanabai Bhatt. During this period, film director Ramesh Sehgal recognized Sardar Malik’s musical talents and offered him the chance to compose music for the 1947 film Renuka.
Following the success of Renuka, Sardar Malik received a flurry of offers to compose music for various films. He lent his musical talents to numerous productions like Chor Bazaar, Abe Hayat, Mera Ghar Mere Bachche, Sargana, Pick Pocket, Satshree Akal, and Nigahen. Notably, the music he crafted for Sargana, Abe Hayat, Pick Pocket, and International Gorilla achieved remarkable popularity and success.
Sardar Malik not only earned a significant reputation in the music industry but also passed on his knowledge to his sons, both of whom entered the world of music and achieved acclaim. Anu Malik, one of Sardar’s sons, enchanted audiences with his musical compositions in numerous blockbuster Bollywood films during the 2000s. Today, Armaan Malik represents the third generation of this musical legacy, continuing to carry the torch of music forward. Armaan Malik has already contributed his voice to over 280 songs.
